South African Chemical Institute Conference
INORG 2005

Welcome

This is the official Web site of the Organizing Committee for the South African Chemical Institute's 2005 conference in Inorganic Chemistry (INORG 2005).

The conference was held from 10-13 April 2005. This web site will continue to run for some time for reference purposes.

Post-Conference Notes

General
The Organizing Committee wishes to thank all delegates who attended INORG 2005 for taking the time out to visit Pietermaritzburg and to be part of a very successful meeting. We'd also like to thank all of our speakers and poster presenters for the very high quality of their contributions. Ultimately, the academic quality of the meeting reflects the high standards of the individual contributions.

Poster Prizes
These were kindly sponsored by Implats. The independent judges for the poster prizes were Profs. Jeremy Rawson (Cambridge), Maurice Brookhart (Chapel Hill), David Parker (Durham), and Dr. Ian Bratt (Implats). The following students received their prizes at the conference banquet, as presented by Dr. Bratt. The Organizing Committee for INORG 2005 wishes to again congratulate these students for their fine poster contributions.

Poster Prize Student University
First Prize MBOTHA, Tebogo E. University of Cape Town
Second Prize SANNASY, Desigan Wits University

Photographs
We were able to take several photographs at the meeting. Some of them are available from this web site for download. Please see our page of thumbnails to select the photos that you might wish to download.

The conference is to be held during the first half of April 2005 (10th-13th) in the city of Pietermaritzburg, the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The host Department is the School of Chemistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg.

The conference venue is Pietermaritzburg's Golden Horse Hotel (4-star rating), situated in safe and rather scenic surroundings in a suburb of the city that is close to shops and other amenities (movies, tenpin bowling, golf courses, the university campus, good restaurants, etc.).  The lecture venue can accommodate around 200 people (very comfortably) for the meeting.  The last meeting held in Pretoria (INORG 2003) attracted around 130 delegates and we expect of the order of 120-150 delegates for INORG 2005 in Pietermaritzburg.

Invitation

We invite you to submit an early registration form to expedite our planning of the conference. All South African Inorganic Chemists as well as interested colleagues from the international community are welcome to contribute to this meeting. Since space is not unlimited, early registration is advised.

From the scientific program, it should be evident that this is not a large meeting as far as the number of lectures is concerned. We may introduce 1 parallel morning session if this is deemed essential. However, we would prefer a conference that has slightly fewer lectures (saturation is not the objective of the meeting). To ensure a high impact, the Committee may have to ask many prospective speakers to present their work as a poster.

Web Site

The present Web site is hosted at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and will be updated periodically to reflect the latest status regarding speakers, the lecture venue, registration information, the scientific program, sponsor information, and travel arrangements.
